When someone tells me they want me to shoot the romantic wedding of their dreams, I don’t get too excited. This is because everyone has their own idea of what romantic is. There is a fine line between tasteful and tacky, and as a wedding photographer, I’ve seen my share of weddings that crossed that line.
However, when Iris and Sasha told me about their plan, I was relieved. You see, it is easy to get carried away and overdo the romantic part. For me, it is not about stuffing the photos full of different heart-shaped details that all send the same message. It is about finding that one perfect detail. And I was very happy that Iris and Sasha felt that way too – their idea was simple, but brilliant. They did not want me to photograph the entire wedding. Instead, they wanted to get away from all the guests and have a romantic photo session on a beach. Just the two of them. That was it. Perfection.
I chose a special spot on the beach, rarely visited by tourists, to secure an intimate set. I’ve done several beach weddings and engagements, but I always get excited when I get to shoot another one. I had high hopes, but in the end, the wedding images turned out even better than I had hoped. It was just like an elopement – when a young couple runs away to secretly get married– only better.
We came to the beach just before sunset. I didn’t even have to give Iris and Sasha any instructions. As soon as we got there, they took off their shoes and went all the way to the water. Surrounded by beautiful nature, illuminated by the setting sun, they hugged and kissed and celebrated their union. The only details that gave away that it was a photo shoot of a wedding couple were their elegant clothes. Minus the shoes, of course. The young couple and the sandy beach were in such perfect harmony that any other details would only take away from the natural beauty of the scene. I think that they managed to achieve the perfect balance between elegance and spontaneity.
